I've read Sophie's blog for the past four years or so and she often makes me laugh and her new book is no exception. These stories about her family will make you laugh until tears are streaming down your face. There are also moments in the book that will make you cry. Sophie has such a knack for storytelling and when reading these stories I felt like I was sitting right beside her listening to her tell them and at other times, I felt like I was riding along in the car with her family to pick up a bucket of fried chicken. Sophie ties in messages of faith through her storytelling which make the book that much more meaningful. Faith and Family are important to us Southerners! The end of the book contains some really great southern recipes which I hope to try out soon. If you are a fan of the Boo Mama blog, then you will most definitely be a fan of this delightful book.Product details

What a wonderful book, filled to the brim with amazing family stories! I laughed, I cried, and then I laughed and cried some more. Sophie Hudson's writing style is real and down to earth, and as you read you get the feeling that you're right there with her at the kitchen table; just chatting away and sipping lemonade. Did I mention that she's funny!? I wish I could be Sophie's real-life friend. She. Is. A. Hoot. And the best part is, she loves Jesus, and she shares her faith beautifully in this book.
As a bonus, there are Southern, family recipes at the back of the book that I can't wait to try. They all sound so good!
So, if you're a Southerner, or a Southerner at heart, like me, you'll want to read this one as soon as possible! Well go on, whaddya y'all waitin' for?
This was a trip down Mississippi memory lane for me! Sophie"s memories reminded me of my "growin' up" years outside Laurel, Mississippi where life lessons were taught in the kitchen in the loving arms of family. It was truly the sweet life where faith, family, good food, love and laughter reign supreme. Sophie Hudson is a heartwarming story-teller. I look forward to sharing this wonderful book with family and friends. I am looking forward to book #2!
When my brother got home from Korea, he told me his favorite parts of my letters were what was between the parentheses. This author uses them when she wants to comment further on what she just wrote about; sometimes it takes her three sets. The CAPS help explain how highly emotional one of the sweet ladies who are part of her extended family she wrote about became over a certain item or event. Lots of God and Jesus references, but nothing " in your face". She shares some recipes at the end.
I fell head over heels for this book, y'all. Sophie might be my new bff. I found myself wanting to reread the book once I had reached the end just so I could spend some more time basking in the Southern charm. Im serious. If you live anywhere in the South, you can identify with Sophie. She tells the best stories about our family trees. I laughed out loud. I may have snorted. Her stories about her mother-in-law and her parents are hilariously endearing.
Let me tell you the one thing I loved about the book more than any other thing. It's the way she talks about Jesus. As we peruse our Christian books, most are often preachy and dry, but she accomplished a rare feat for her readers. She talked about our Jesus in such a natural way that it catches you off guard. Her delight and enjoyment of Him flows easily in her stories. She has given us a unique gift. Grab a copy and enjoy. Delight.
Warning This book will make you want to consume large quantities of bacon and copious amounts of butter. Amen. Bless the Lord.
I don't read a lot of non-fiction. And I rarely--if ever--post a review of the few I do read. However, I couldn't keep my excitement about this book to myself. It would be a disservice to you, my faithful readers, and the public at large.
A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet by Sophie Hudson is hands down the best book I've read this year. RUN to the store and get yourself a copy. NOW. Don't even read the rest of this review. Just buy a copy for yourself ... and maybe one for your mama and your grandmama and your best friend too.
Sophie has an incredible talent for weaving stories of her very southern family together with nuggets of spiritual truths. Some of the stories are quite poignant. (Reader Tip #1 Have a box of tissues on hand for the first two chapters.) Others are happy tears streaming down your face, wet your pants funny. (Reader Tip #2 Particularly for chapter 7, it would be in everyone's best interests to "go potty" prior to reading. I am not lying to you when I tell you I nearly wet my pants--and thus the bed--while reading this chapter very late one night. Additionally, my dear husband thought I was having a seizure because of the spasms I was having while trying to laugh silently so as not to wake him up. Needless to say, he woke up anyway.) But each story shines a light on the legacy of faith that Sophie and her husband are so blessed to have. Plus, Sophie tells these stories in such a way where her family seems to leap right off the pages, becoming more than just "characters" in a book (which of course they are, since they're real people and all).
By the end of the book, I literally could.not.put.it.down. I read the last two chapters on the way to church one night and sat in the car in the parking lot to finish the last few pages. (Pastor, I apologize for coming in late to service that night. This book was just so good!) (Reader Tip #3 Clear your calendar when you pick up this book. Your spouse, children, dog, pastor, and friends will thank you for it.)
Sophie's reflections about the treasures she has in her family made me reflect on my own family. There were moments while reading where I found myself imagining my mom or grandmother doing or saying the exact same thing. (Southerners are really all alike, you know.) Southern born and bred, I have a new appreciation for the way we sit around after dinner and tell stories--some of which I've heard at least half a million times.
Every year it seems that one book stands out as a book that must be read by all. And it inevitably ends up under every Christmas tree we visit because I can't stand the thought of everyone I know not getting to read this book. For 2013, I feel certain that A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet will be that book (unless I can't wait until December to share it). (And for any relatives or in-real-life friends who may be reading this, act surprised when you open your Christmas gift this year!)
A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet reminds Southerners of the joys of being Southern and is a great introduction to the best parts of the South for those who may not have the privilege of living here--faith, family, and lots of laughs.
